Where Baseball and Nerds Collide

Quick Thoughts- August 18th

For a city known for it's seafood, it makes sense that there hottest player is named Carp

Try the Carp, It’s Fresh-

The Seattle Mariners have not garnered much national interest this year aside from the epic losing streak that they maintained from July 5th and lasted until the Mariners beat the Yankees 9-2 on July 27th. It has been a bad year for the Mariners, after having a terrible 2010 season also. The team finished with 101 losses and are currently on pace for roughly 90 losses this year. Coming into the year Seattle was looking for Justin Smoak to play a big part in their offense, Mike Carp started the year in AAA Tacoma. All Carp did to start the year was have a slash line of .343/.411/.649 in 286 plate appearances. Carp also slugged 21 homers.  While Carp had never hit over .300 before in the minors and only once slugged over .500, which was in 2010, He is just 25 years old and is coming into what is considered the prime years. The lefty-slugger was called up on July 18th after getting a shot at the majors for most of June. After being recalled he has reached base safely in all 24 games and hit safely in 22 of the 24. He currently has the longest current hitting streak in major league baseball standing at 17, after Dan Uggla’s incredible run came to an end. Carp has seen time at first base, left field, but mostly designated hitter (which is a topic that will be discussed later tonight here on Baseball Nerds, stay tuned).  Carp has clearly taken advantage of the opportunities he was given and will likely be in the mix for playing time in Seattle once the 2012 season rolls around. It is fairly save to say Carp’s hitting streak will definitely end before he eclipses the 56-game streak that Joe DiMaggio still holds, but Carp is proving to be a bright spot in an otherwise dreary2011 campaign for the Mariners.

There hasn't been a lot of cause for celebration on Sunday games this year for the Rockies

The Rockies Keep The Sabbath Holy-

Sunday’s have not been a good day for the Colorado Rockies as far as winning is concerned. The 2011 season hasn’t gone as planned, coming into the year they were thought to be one of the top contenders to win the NL West but it has been all down hill since then. The Rockies are currently 12 games behind the first place Diamondbacks in the division. The strangest stat about the Rockies season has been the 2-17 record they have while playing on Sunday. They won the first two Sunday match-ups on the season, which puts them currently in the midst of one of the stranger 17-game losing streaks out there. Even if the Rockies had won 8 out of 17 in that stretch they would be right behind the Giants and Diamondbacks in the NL West race, instead of sitting outside of striking distance 12 games back.
